Browns | Tip for the week of February 28, 2005 Before the unthinkable happens, here are a few things you can do to protect your credit. - Make sure you have all the information you need if your wallet or purse is stolen. Make a copy the things in your wallet or purse. If a theft should occur you will have everything you need to cancel your accounts.
- Something that most don't think of, have your personal checks use only your first initial and last name. If your checkbook is stolen the thief won’t know how you sign it. Then sign your checks using your full name. If someone else tries to cash one of your checks and signs it incorrectly your bank will immediately know it is not your signature and you are protected.
- Remember speed is important here. Make sure you cancel all credit cards that were stolen fast. You will need proof so file a police report in the city where the theft took place. Then contact the credit bureaus listed below and Social Security Administration office to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number.
- Finally, pre-approved credit card applications that come in the mail are a headache just waiting to happen. Stop the mailings before someone takes them from your mailbox and open accounts in your name. Opt out of pre-approved credit offers, call 1-888-5-OPTOUT
